HyperVoxels Update Relative Particle Age Gradient By Stephen Schleicher

NewTek released the latest update to LightWave this week that included a small update to the HyperVoxels engine that allows you to vary the shading of particles relative to the particle age.

What makes this new option a great addition is your particle shading will now more naturally follow the life of the particle.  Let?s take a look at this in action.

Step 1:  In Layout, create a Particle Emitter and name it Particle Age.

Step 2:  Under the FX_Emitter Panel, in the Particle Tab, leave the Life Time setting at 60 frame, and change the +/- amount to 30.  This will cause some of the particles to only live one second, while other particles could last three seconds.  In other words, the lifespan of any one particle is between 30 and 90 frames.

Step 3:  Change the Y-axis velocity to 8 under the Motion Tab.  This will cause the particles to move upward.  To get the particles to spread out change the Explosion amount to 5.

Step 4:
Finally under the Etc. Tab, change the Y-axis Gravity to -9, which is close enough for this exercise.

You should end up with a nice volcanic looking explosion.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
